Carlos P. Flores Suarez, B.S.
I joined the Wythe lab in the summer of 2018 as a graduate student from the Molecular Physiology and Biophysics program at Baylor College of Medicine. I received my bachelor’s degree in biology in 2014 from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. At that time, I studied the role of ion channels from wild plants in the resistance against heavy metals. This was an interesting project in which I had to deal with non-model organisms that share a non-desirable feature: no genetic information at all.
I came to Houston in the summer of 2017 to pursue the next step of my long-term goals. I had the big opportunity to join this program and during my first year, I rotated in four different labs from my department. I enjoyed the whole experience of my first year and I will miss my classes. My last rotation was in the Wythe lab in which I got immersed in the vascular research. I hope to understand and answer critical questions about the physiology and development of ateriovenous specification for the sake of basic scientific knowledge and also to possibly apply these findings to translational research.
Carlos was awarded an AHA predoctoral fellowship for 2022-2024 and successfully defended his graduate thesis in December of 2023.
After earning his Ph.D. Carlos earned a prestigous CPRIT TRIUMPH Postdoctoral Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center to pursue his interest in translational research and medical sciences.
